Adult Eastern Great Egret (Ardea modesta) at Kyoto, Japan - July 2013
Local Name (Japan): Dai-sagi (ダイサギ) - "Large Heron"
NO UK STATUS / IUCN Red List: Least Concern
The Eastern Great Egret is another recent split by some authorities - it is split from the Great White Egret found across most of Eurasia. The Eastern Great Egret is smaller than the Great White Egret and found across East Asia and Australasia. I saw this bird a few times in Kyoto, not being aware of the split, and so have ended up with this picture where it was in the background of a shot with 4 heron species.
Subspecies: None - monotypic
